The consensus is tiny, the tail is enormous

The 50 most-mentioned albums together carry less than eleven percent. It takes around a thousand titles to make up half. And 4,618 albums are named by exactly one person in the entire corpus. The horizontal axis is logarithmic.

The top of the list is not what you expect

Linkin Park is the third most-mentioned artist and still draws the least approval: 1.7 upvotes per mention. Pink Floyd reaches 8.3. Being named and being celebrated are two different things. Both lists show the top 10 and expand in full on click.

Every genre has its own consensus

Pick a genre and both rankings refer to that slice only. The assignment covers 4,445 mentions across the most-mentioned acts.

One album or a whole body of work?

For some artists everyone thinks of the same record. For others the mentions spread across half the catalogue. The bar shows how much of that goes to the single most-mentioned title.

The loudest genres are not the best loved

Hip-Hop draws barely a third of the mentions that Alternative & Indie gets and still earns more approval per mention. Soul, Funk & R&B leads with 6.5 upvotes, on just 122 mentions.

The thread remembers the nineties

Half of all dated recommendations fall between 1986 and 2001, 65 percent of them before the turn of the millennium. Tinted band: middle half, line: median.

Every year has its own number one

Oldest year first, running right, one block per year. Each block holds the three most-mentioned albums of that year, sorted by mentions and, where tied, by upvotes. 1994 alone would fill eleven.
