The impatient question
You have tracked for one week and look at the evaluation. It shows almost nothing, or something that reverses again after a few days. The obvious question: am I doing something wrong, or does this just take time?
The short answer: it takes time. Mood is noisy, fluctuating strongly from day to day, and useful patterns need repetition. This article gives you realistic rules of thumb so you do not give up too early and do not over-interpret too early.
Why one week is almost never enough
Imagine you want to know whether you feel worse on Mondays. With one week of data you have exactly one Monday, a single data point. If it was a bad Monday, your app "proves" the Monday blues. If it happened to be a good one, it proves the opposite. Both are worthless.
Rule of thumb: rarer means longer
For a weekly pattern to become visible, you need several repetitions of each weekday, roughly four to six Mondays and four to six Sundays. That is four to six weeks, just for the simplest of all structures.
On top of that comes the background noise. Your mood fluctuates for hundreds of reasons you never record: an argument, a missed alarm, an unexpectedly nice evening. Only when a factor repeats often enough does its effect rise above this noise.
Rules of thumb by time horizon
The following numbers are not hard thresholds but orientation. They adjust your expectations to what the amount of data realistically allows.

Three things decide how quickly patterns become visible:
How often you record. One entry per day is the basis. Those who consistently include relevant factors collect usable comparisons faster.
How few gaps you have. Gaps are not bad for your wellbeing, but they slow down the recognition of patterns because comparison days are missing. Still, the rule holds: better an honest gap than forced tracking. Why is explained in Tracking without compulsion.
How strong the effect is. A strong connection, for example between very poor sleep and very low mood, catches the eye earlier than a weak one. Subtle effects need more data to stand out from the noise.
The single case in research
The idea of systematically comparing a single person with themselves over time is also scientifically established. In medicine it is called an N-of-1 trial: a single person is the entire sample, and over many repeated measurements you can find out what works for exactly this person. The core is always the same, whether in the clinic or in your journal: enough repetitions to separate signal from chance.
Two mistakes that try to replace patience
Interpreting too early. Announcing a pattern after ten days is the most common mistake. Almost every "pattern" from so little data is chance. Why this happens so easily is explained in Correlation is not causation.
Tracking too much at once. Those who record thirty factors at the same time will, purely by chance, find a connection somewhere, because many comparisons produce many false hits. The realistic frame of expectation
If you see little after three weeks, you are not doing anything wrong, you are exactly on plan. Treat the first phase as what it is: building a routine and collecting raw material. The reward does not come in the first week but when the first stable factor patterns appear after two to three months and the seasonal ones after a year.
